Deborah Bubela gave herself an early Christmas present this year — a yellow Dutch Colonial in a rural setting with an easy drive to her job as an assistant professor of physical therapy at the University of Connecticut.

“I decided because of the great interest rates that if I was going to buy a house, now was the time,” Bubela, 52, said.

With her 86-year-old mother moving in with her soon, accessibility and a first-floor bedroom and bath were priorities. The house also has a ramp in the back.

“I know my Mom can be with me for a long time,” Bubela said. The house, which is in move-in condition, also has some “unique and welcoming” features, she said.

“There’s a beautiful large screened-in back porch,” Bubela said. “I could envision my Mom and I having dinners out there on summer evenings, and sitting on the porch swing and spending time together.”

The previous owner was an elderly woman, now deceased, whose family cared for her as she grew older. Bubela says this shared value of caring for an aging parent helped both parties in their negotiations.

Bubela credits her real estate broker, Chris Grant of CG Real Estate in North Windham, for helping her stay focused, even as his family of four grew to six with the arrival of twin girls this fall. “He never missed a beat,” she said after the closing on Dec. 9, just 30 days after signing the contract.

“When we finally found this house, in every sense, it fit her needs,” Grant said.

The house has some elements Bubela had loved in her previous homes, including a gambrel roof and yellow exterior. It also has a brick fireplace that opens to the living room and serves as a brick wall in the dining room — just like the one her father built in the home where she grew up.

She plans to light a fire in that fireplace as she celebrates the holidays with her mother, two grown children and her brother and his family, and enjoy the comforts of her new home.

“There’s a feeling you get when you’re in the house you’re meant to be in,” Bubela said.

First-Time Home Buyers Presentation

Peter Leeds, realtor with CG Real Estate in North Windham, Connecticut, hosts a First-Time Home Buyers Presentation on January 14, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the CG Real Estate office at 361 Boston Post Road in North Windham.  Peter is presenting this program to those who want to overcome the fear and mystery of purchasing a new home for the first time.
