A River Does Run Through It — And Now We See It

On one of my recent walks though our little city of Willimantic, CT, I had to stop and wonder what was different and also kind of amazing.

I could see the Willimantic River as it tumbled through the eastern part of the city, and it was a delight to witness. Gone was the ugly, prison-like barbed wire fence. Gone were the weed trees and waving plastic bags. Gone was the trash that had buit up for decades. Although bright orange fencing was visible, it suggested something better to come and at the same time allowed a view of the river that was spectacular.

The work being performed by the Windham Public Works Department is only partially done at this point, as they chisel time out from taking care of Windham’s parks, cemeteries, roads, and sidewalks, but what has been done thus far is the bears’ share of the task. The Willimantic River, so vital to the current life and history not only of the city of Willimantic and the town of Windham, but to the entire northeastern section of Connecticut, is now visible for all to see on lower Main Street near Tacos La Rosa, The Garden on the Bridge, and Willimantic Recreation Park. In fact, this section of the river will add to the recreational opportunities offered by Rec Park, as this gem of a park is fondly and locally called.

Drive carefully or walk slowly by this riverscape vista. You will love what you see on lower Main Street in Willimantic.

Saturday, April 21, Record Store Day Saturday, April 21, is Record Store Day, and Willimantic, CT, will have an active participant since our small town in eastern Connecticut is home to one of the few record stores in our state. Plan to spend part of your Saturday in Willimantic Records on Railroad Street in Willimantic. FYI, records in this case are not the ones set by Olympic athletes nor the ones kept by your champion bookkeepers, but those thin, round pieces of vinyl that once were presumed to go the way of typewriters, 8-track tape players, and telephones with cords. But records have fought their way back, and I can attest to the nature of the sound when I heard my Uncle Louis play a record and a c.d. back to back — of Dion and the Belmonts. Different and wonderful. Check out Willimantic Records on Railroad Street, Willimantic, this Saturday or any day. While you’re in town, yes, you can take pictures of the frogs on the bridge, but even better, stop by one of our excellent restaurants, depending on the time. Whatever It Takes — Within Reason: Seeking The Perfect Home In Willmantic, CT

My friend was incredulous. “You would do that!” he shouted in a tone usually reserved for those planning to swim with alligators, camp out on an active volcano rim, or kayak the Atlantic without a life jacket. “Yes,” I answered calmly. “I would do that without question or remorse. I am battling for my client, and I will do whatever it takes — within reason — to help my client achieve his goal.” My client’s goal: A multi-family home to own AND LIVE IN. In Willimantic, CT, a town he loves and has roots in. Hopefully on a quiet street with a nice little yard. Not outrageous, right? And what was the incredible act I planned? To contact by phone, email, and postcard various owners to see if they might consider at some point in the future a sale of their home. Not a hard-core push, just a gentle inquiry. My client and his family had taken a drive around Willimantic and spotted out various properties. As I drove with them, feeling the energy and excitement of the search, I gathered the details. I knew exactly what they wanted. I made a list and planned some calls. I mentioned this to my friend, who has another friend with exactly that kind of desired property. As I said, my friend was astounded. Realty is my third career. A hallmark of my previous two: Work for my people. Do whatever it takes — within reason — to get my people what they want or need. The English language is adaptable and flexible, as the English and then we Americans have always proved to be. Our language embraces many origins, the most notable being Latin, harkening to the Roman invasion and occupation of a rainy, cloudy, but fertile outpost called Brittania. To this day, many words we speak are derived from Latin origins, and one such word is “agent.”

With pride and vigor, I declare myself a real estate agent, and I am proud to be a part of a real estate team which exemplifies so many positive attributes of being a real estate agent. The word “agent” is rooted in the Latin word that had four meanings: Drive, Lead, Act, Do. Outstanding agents are not just about sales and selling; outstanding agents drive, lead, act, and do.

Team members of CG Greal Estate have performed all of these Latin activities in recent times.

Drive. One agent has “driven” his bicycle across Massachusetts in the cancer fundraiser Pan Mass Challenge. All of CG Real Estate’s agents drive to faraway places to meet clients and assist all parties in achieving their goals.

Lead. The agents of CG Real Estate lead in their communities in sports programs and other volunteer activities. One of our agents works closely with young, first-time buyers to lead them to successful home ownership.
